Did Christ really exist? Or was he just a legend, a myth, created from older stories. Was Christ a myth derived from Krishna? Or could it be that maybe Christ is a legend related to Buddha? What about the similarity between Christ and the ancient Roman deity Mithras? Maybe all the prophecies about him, such as Isaiah 53, are fraudulent distortions of the Hebrew scriptures.

After writing the book "Jesus Believes in Evolution," and posting this website, I was asked by people to address the question of whether Christ was just a myth. Whether his legend was derived from legends of other ancient heroes. Luckily, I already had done a lot of research on the topic, and decided to post my research here. One of the primary reasons I think Jesus is real, not just a myth, is because of the enormous quantity and diversity of literature written about Jesus within a hundred years of his death. No other major religion can claim the combination of historical veracity with god-man for its religious leader. Buddhism's earliest texts were written hundreds of years after the Buddha was gone. Krishna's historical personhood is in even more doubt. Mohammed has history to prove his real existence, but admits that he is no god-man. Moses has neither history nor divinity to back him up. If any space alien god came to earth to walk among us, Jesus Christ is it, primarily because so much history was written about him within a few decades of his death, and the diversity of opinion within those writings makes an orchastrated hoax unlikely. It's as if everyone saw an alien, Jesus Christ, but nobody knew what he was, so each person wrote their own story about him. The best reconciliation of these stories has become Christianity.

To answer the Christ myth question, we should never rely on what modern authors say. Instead, we must thorougly analyze the ancient texts themselves, and back up everything with footnotes. This is because far too many people have an axe to grind and will distort the facts to support their preconceived ideas. The Christ myth theories are especially difficult to research, because those who espouse them seldom reference primary sources to support their claims. Instead, they merely reference other people who have previously said the same thing without giving the chapter and verse of any ancient text to back it up. To find what the heck they were talking about, I have had to rummage through an immense amount of literature to find the supposed mythological borrowing, and seldom have I found their claims to be of any merit. Where similarities do exist between the Buddhist, Hindu, Mithraic, and Christian stories, they are either not closely related or the eastern texts cannot be proven to predate Christianity. But don't take my word for it. I encourage everyone to scour the ancient texts for themselves and reach their own conclusions.
